DWYER LEADS COX TO REGION TITLE

Cox needed a shootout to slip by Kempsville in the Eastern Region girls soccer championship game Friday at Salem High School.

After the teams battled to a scoreless tie in regulation and overtime, Cox outscored Kempsville, 3-1, in the shootout, with Robin Dwyer garnering the game-clinching goal by beating Chiefs' keeper Kelly Sisley to the right corner.

``I decided which way I was going to go before we took the penalty kicks,'' an exhausted Dwyer said. ``It feels good. I like playing hard and winning.''

As region champion, Cox earned the right to host Tuesday's state quarterfinal against the runner-up of the Northwest Region's final late Friday between Woodbridge and C.D. Hylton. Kempsville will travel to the site of the champion.

After two five-minute overtimes and two five-minute sudden death overtimes, Kempsville's Erin Duckett took the first of her team's penalty attempts. Duckett got her shot past Cox keeper Laura McFerrin. Cox's Liz Coon then tied the score with a goal in the right corner of the net.

On their next attempts, Kempsville's Lora Phelps and Cox's Joanna Hale each hit the crossbar. Lauren Rafal then missed wide for the Chiefs, but Erica Webb bolted a shot for Cox passed a diving Sisley, who had 9 saves.

Jo Thompson's shot went wide to the right, leaving Kempsville's fate in Dwyer's hands.

``I was completely blank,'' said Sisley of her head-to-head battle with Dwyer. ``I didn't know how to feel. I don't think that penalty kicks really determine a winner. It's too bad they can't call it a tie. It was a hard fought game on both sides.

``I don't know how, but I knew from the beginning of the game that it was going to come down to PK's.''

The Chiefs managed to contain Kirsty Hale and Dwyer - the Falcons most dangerous scorers - with Erin Duckett and Kelly Lawver in man-to-man coverage.

``I took some speed out of the offense and tried to mark their offense,'' Kempsville coach Ed Hackett said. ``I gave up a little up front, but we had our chances.'' by CNB
