RELIGION IS SEPARATE

In response to the article (May 21) about the church keeping its tax free status while speaking on political issues, my mind first raced to the Middle East. The religious leaders are the government. Then I thought about Northern Ireland, Protestant killing Catholic. What about Bosnia? Who is killing who over what political beliefs? Is this what might happen to us if we allow government and church to merge? I know this is simplistic, but maybe it starts simply.

When I go to church on Sunday I want to forget all that is going on around me. I want to sit quietly to talk to the Lord, review my past week and pray for the strength to deal with what the next week will bring. I will have nowhere to go to escape the pounding of political ideologies. What is wrong with leaving the church to teaching scripture? I can make political decisions based on my own beliefs.
