MARY MITCHELL

Mary Barker Goodman Mitchell, 87, of the 2200 block of West Road, died Saturday, May 27, 1995, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Norfolk and was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Minnie Felton Barker. She was the widow of William Byron Mitchell.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church in Chesapeake, the Tidewater Senior Citizens Band as well as the Grasshopper Band of the Grassfield Senior Citizens; she had also been a member of the Berkley Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star; and recipient of the ``Mother of the Year'' Award presented by the Hickory Ruritan Club in 1978. Mrs. Mitchell also had played the violin with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra from 1925 to 1930.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Midgette and Mary Harkness, both of Chesapeake, and Nancy Brantley of Raleigh, N.C.; her two stepsons, Byron ``Buddy'' Mitchell of Virginia Beach and Jerry Mitchell of Hollywood, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Good Hope United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Copeland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge.
