Nicole Palmieri has been named as this year recipient of the East Coast Surfing Championships/Hugh Kitchin/Dusty Hinnant Memorial Scholarship.
The First Colonial senior was chosen from a variety of nominees for the $1,500 award.
Palmieri has been surfing since she was 13 and her first contest was - naturally - the ECSC. She placed second in the women's division last summer.
The Eastern Surfing Association member also placed second in the Eastern Regionals last year and advanced to the national championships.
She has been featured in several national surfing publications.
Palmieri will attend the University of North Florida to study either physical or occupational therapy.
They get a kick out of it.
The Cox High boys and girls junior varsity soccer teams have ruled the JV scene the past two years, recently completing their second-straight unbeated seasons.
Actually, the girls have owned the competition for the last three years and have never lost a game since the JV program started.
The boys team opened the season with a 1-1 tie against First Colonial and then won the next eight games - outscoring opponents by a 44-5 margin. Colin Kibler - now the starting keeper for the varsity team - led the Falcons in scoring with nine goals. Tim Metts and Jason Lehr each had eight.
The girls outscored their opponents, 73-0. Briane Baylor led the way with 17 goals, followed by Katie Kubic, Beth Reading, Hollie Robinson and Kelly Scott. Erin O'Boyle was the keeper.
Speaking of soccer.
The second annual Virginia Beach Sand Soccer Kickout will be held on the beach June 10-11 and the registration turnout has astounded organizers.
The inaugural event drew only 28 teams, but word spread of how fun the competition was. So there are more than 125 teams signed up for this year's event - being billed as the North American Sand Soccer Championships.
The highlight of the weekend will be a special memorial bracket of two coed teams from local high schools playing in honor of Matthew Fidler of First Colonial and Ryan Smith of Princess Anne.
The two Beach FC players died last year in a scuba diving accident in the Bahamas.
Hoop it up.

Team members are Andrew Normand, Michael Ballard, STeven Maloney, Jacoby Key, Wes Petticrew, Joseph Sargent, David Rodgers, Stephen Haupt, John Gilchrist, Loren Sisson and William Cochrane.
