A Norfolk woman, apparently upset with her dog's behavior, set the animal on fire Tuesday evening, police spokesman Larry Hill said.
The dog, named Furious, was burned on its lower back and tail and its whiskers were singed, Hill said.
Furious, a 1-year-old German shepherd, was taken to an emergency hospital for treatment and was resting at the Norfolk SPCA Tuesday night. The dog was scheduled to be taken to the Dog and Cat Hospital on 21st Street today for further treatment, Hill said.
Police and animal protection officers were called to the 1100 block of Jernigan Ave. just after 6 p.m. after a report that a woman was setting her dog on fire, Hill said. There they found the dog's owner 30-year-old Rosalind White.
Another dog, an 8-month-old yellow Labrador mix named ``Voodoo,'' was taken from the home for the dog's safety, Hill said.
White was charged by animal protection officer Jody Griffin with cruelty to animals, two counts of not having a dog license and two counts of not having dog vaccinations.
Police said that White apparently set Furious on fire because she was distraught that the dog had torn up the house while she was at work.
The investigation is continuing.
