WOODBRIDGE OUSTS MAURY TENNIS TEAM THE VIKINGS WIN THE TOP 4 SINGLES MATCHES TO REACH THE STATE SEMIFINALS.

Woodbridge won four of six singles matches to beat Maury, 6-3, in a Group AAA boys tennis quarterfinal Tuesday. The Vikings (16-1) advance to the state semifinals at the University of Richmond on Friday.

Maury (15-1) played without its No. 4 player, Ryan Bose, for disciplinary reasons.

``We obviously missed him,'' Maury coach John Brinkman said. ``But it was still a close match and could have gone either way.''

The Commodores got singles victories from Gary Johnson at No. 5 and Jay Lara at No. 6. Johnson topped Jason Wild, 6-2, 7-5, while Lara defeated Jason Nevit, 6-1, 6-4.

Johnson and Lara also teamed for a three-set victory over Wild and Nevit at No. 3 doubles.

``It made us play more intense,'' Lara said of Maury's 4-2 deficit before his doubles match. ``Even after we lost the second set, we felt like we were still in control.''

Woodbridge won the top four singles matches as David Terrill stopped Ben Perry, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, and Derrick Wafford upended Rob Brown, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, at No. 2.

The Vikings' Jeff Gotherman bested Ross Hoffman in straight sets at No. 3 singles, and Tom Huisking won a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Nick Bruno at No. 4.

At No. 1 doubles, Terrill and Wafford won a first-set tie-breaker, 10-8, and rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take the second, 6-2, against Perry and Bruno.

``By far this was our toughest match,'' Perry said. ``(Terrill and Wafford) had some good serves, but our returns could have been a little better.''

Gotherman and Huisking came back after losing the first set, 6-3, to take a third-set tie-breaker from Brown and Hoffman. by CNB
