KIROV STUDENT TO PERFORM IN DANCE CENTER'S RECITAL

PHILLIP DEAL, who is studying with the prestigious Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., will be the guest performer during The Dance Center's spring recitals at Franklin High School.

The first recital, Saturday, involves children from ages 3 to 8. The older dancers will perform Sunday .

The theme of the little ones' performance is ``In Tumbleweed Country,'' in keeping with the popularity of country music.

The older children are involved with a mix of art and the movies, dancing to ``Degas' Vision'' and ``Movie Matinee.'' They will perform with Phillip and Anna Maria Martinez, who teaches at Virginia Beach Ballet and in that city's public schools.

Five of her students, all boys, will be coming with her to dance to ``Katunil,'' from Walt Disney's ``The Jungle Book.''

Another performer is Steve Branch, 23, a student/teacher at The Dance Center, who recently won a full scholarship to study with the Joffrey Ballet in New York.

Phillip, 14, who is studying with Kirov, is working with Madame Yelena Vinogradova, that company's artistic director. He is one of 25 students accepted from a field of 800 who auditioned for the 1994-95 school year, which began in September.

Academy emphasis is on classic ballet methods and techniques.

``The school encourages Phillip's modern style of dance,'' said his mother, Matilde Deal. ``However, over the next two years, he will increase his studies in the professional level classic ballet program.

``He works diligently every day in rigid mental and physical training disciplines,'' she said.

``In the not too distant future,'' Phillip said, ``you will see me on stage professionally, in the classics.''

In Franklin, he will perform a lyrical jazz dance to Michael Bolton's ``Yesterday,'' choreographed by Fran Peters, and he will do an a capella tap, which he choreographed. Tickets are $5, available at the door. Call 569-9094. MEMO: ``In Tumbleweed Country'' will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday; ``Degas'

Vision'' and ``Movie Matinee'' at 3 p.m. Sunday, at the Franklin High

School auditorium.
