The Rev. John Thomas Evans Sr., 84, of the 2600 block of Janson Drive, died May 31, 1995, in a Chesapeake hospital.
A native of Edenton, he was the widower of Louise H. Evans and was a retired Baptist minister. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk and was ordained as a minister at Trinity Baptist Church. He was a member of the Portsmouth and Norfolk Ministerial Association. He pastored churches in North Carolina and Virginia between 1950 and 1976 when he retired from Taylor Road Baptist Church. During retirement he enjoyed continued ministry with 11 local Baptist churches. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three daughters, Lynne Walker of Angier, N.C., Bonny Bailey of Chesapeake and Elizabeth Young of Norfolk; a son, John T. Evans Jr. of Williamsburg, Va.; two brothers, Edison M. Evans of Suffolk and Charles C. Evans of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Carter and Dr. John Mason. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to Branche/Evans Scholarship Fund, c/o Trinity Baptist Church, or Hope Haven Children's Home, Virginia Beach.
