DR. WILLIAM B. CRAWFORD JR.

William Burdette Crawford Jr., M.D., 71, of Lancaster County, passed away on Monday, May 29, 1995, at his home.

Dr. Crawford was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Clendennin, W.Va., son of William B. Crawford Sr. and Edna Brown Crawford. He did undergraduate work at Virginia Military Institute and graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Virginia in 1948. Dr. Crawford did his post graduate training in general surgery in New York and Baltimore and was in private practice for 19 years in Woodstock. He worked for 14 years for the Virginia Department of Health, first as director for the City of Virginia Beach and then as medical director for the Eastern Region. He retired in 1988 and moved to Lancaster County, where he had spent his formative years.

Dr. Crawford was a member of numerous medical and specialty associations. He was active as a youth and adult in Boy Scouts of America and was the recipient of Silver Beaver and Distinguished Eagle Scouts awards. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder.

Surviving along with his wife, Ethel Roscoe Crawford, are two sons, W. Bruce Crawford of New Orleans, La., and T. Hugh Crawford of Lexington, Va.; two stepchildren, Ellie Gillenwater of Virginia Beach and Frank Tavenner of Texas and 10 grandchildren. A stepson, John Tavenner, preceded him in death in 1992. A brother and sister also preceded him in death. Dr. Crawford's first wife, Florence Nelson Crawford passed away May 28, 1968.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, by the Rev. Charles D. Symons Jr. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Campbell Presbyterian Church, Weems, by Dr. William Morris. Arrangements are being handled by Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VMI Foundation, Boy Scouts of America or the charity of your choice.
