DIRECT FROM D'ART ARTISTS

While I was very heartened to read about successful artists on the front page of the Business section (``The Deal of the Art,'' May 17) and the astute judgment of a downtown hotel to commission local artists to produce art for its renovated building, I strongly disagree with comments made regarding the purchase and/or commissioning of fine art through art centers.

At the d'Art Center, each of the 35 Resident Artists is an independent business person who not only produces exhibition-quality fine art, but also directly manages his or her own art sales with both private art patrons and commercial buyers.

The d'Art Center, which directs the programs of the center as a cultural and educational attraction for citizens and visitors of the region and provides a stable environment in which an artistic community can thrive, counsels and acts as a resource to its artists, but in no way interfers with or financially profits from individual artists' sales.

It is very easy to deal directly with artists at the d'Art Center. Specifically, buyers have the opportunity to deal directly with 35 different fine artists at the d'Art Center. That is exactly what we are about.
