An Army helicopter on a cross-country flight from Kentucky to Virginia Beach was forced to make an emergency landing late Tuesday in a field near Bennett's Creek.
The single occupant of the OH-6 light observation helicopter was shaken up but otherwise uninjured, said Carol Jones, a spokeswoman for the Army at Fort Bragg, N.C.
An unknown malfunction forced the pilot, identified as Chief Warrant Officer Dana Jones, 27, to set the aircraft down hard, she said. Some damage was sustained to the tail boom of the helicopter.
The helicopter is being guarded in the field and will remain there until the Army conducts an investigation and determines how to remove it.
The pilot was treated and released at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
The helicopter was one of two en route to Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach. Both are assigned to the 160th Special Operations Regiment at Fort Campbell, Ky., and are on training missions.
