Homicide detectives are investigating the Friday morning discovery of a decomposed body in a patch of woods in the 5400 block of Virginia Beach Blvd.
Police said they were unsure of a cause of death and have not identified the remains. Detectives guessed the body may have been in the woods near a 7-Eleven for three to six months.
The woods are often used for drug dealing and as a shortcut linking a strip shopping center to nearby apartments and homes.
The body has been sent to Norfolk for an autopsy.
Detectives described the body as that of a black male, about 6-foot-3, whose age is unknown. The victim had a gold tooth with a star shape, and another tooth that was rimmed in gold.
The victim was wearing jeans, a Notre Dame Fighting Irish T-shirt, a denim jacket and white Reebok high-top shoes. Around his neck was a pendant with a wooden cross.
Police ask that anyone with information call 427-0000.
