On Thursday afternoon, small globules of oil began washing ashore near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Hatteras Island, said Ries Collier, a National Park Service official.
Between 200 and 300 yards of beach were littered with three- to four-inch diameter spots of oil. ``It was relatively sparse,'' Collier said Friday afternoon.
``The globules were about every 10 or 20 feet down the beach.''
No one knows what caused the oil to wash ashore, Collier said. As of late Friday, there were no other reports of oil on any other areas of the Outer Banks beaches.
``It sounds like an old source of oil that's come ashore for some reason,'' Collier said.
``The Coast Guard inspected the area and contacted an environmental clean-up group. Three or four people out there with shovels were cleaning it up this morning. It should be clear by now.''
