PIER FISHING ALONG BEACHES TO NORTH OFF TO STRONG START

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fairly good Friday morning, but slowed down as the day progressed.

On Kitty Hawk Pier, a few blues and Spanish mackerel were taken just after sunrise. Avalon Pier reported scattered blues and Spanish mackerel landed on jiggers.

Some small gray trout and spot also were taken. Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught fair numbers of Spanish, blues, small bottom fish and a few trout. On Jennette's Pier, fishing was generally slow with a few keeper gray trout later in the afternoon. Outer Banks Pier reported a good run of Spanish mackerel early in the day. Later, some small blues and gray trout were landed.

Piers on Hatters Island reported a few blues and small bottom fish taken. Anglers on Frisco Pier landed one 11-pound king mackerel. Several other kings and a tarpon were seen in the clear 75-degree water.

Surf casters from Corolla to Buxton caught a few blues and small bottom fish Friday. Anglers at Cape Point landed some blues, Spanish mackerel and a few puppy drum. Along the south beach, small bottom fish and a few gray trout were taken. A number of 30- to 50-pound cobia were caught by boaters in Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet on Friday was productive, with charters landing 30 to 40 Spanish on half-day trips.

Yellowfin tuna and dolphin fishing was fair northeast of Oregon Inlet. Action southeast of the inlet was excellent, with plenty of large dolphin taken. A blue marlin weighing 438 pounds was taken aboard the charter boat Polyanna.

Good-size dolphin were plentiful off Hatteras east of the ``280 Rocks.'' Tuna fishing in the area was fair, with charters landing two to three 50-pounders per boat. Marlin fishing in the area slowed down with 10 billfish reported. Releases included two white marlin by the Top Billing, blue marlin by the Eagle and Flying Fisherman, and a sailfish by the Release.

King mackerel action should improve on Frisco Pier as warm, clear water has moved into the area.

Water temperature at the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers Pier at Duck was 68 degrees Friday. by CNB
