Marilee Hawkins, the city's director of environmental services, will head the 1995 United Way campaign in Portsmouth.
Hawkins, a former United Way vice chair for the Portsmouth region, sees a real need for more programs and services in the community that will help children and families.
``We need to help families, whatever their makeup, because every child needs at least one adult that they can trust and that believes in them. That is how we get healthy adults,'' she said.
Hawkins, a native of Seattle, attended the University of Washington. She has a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Her other volunteer roles include two years of service as a member of the United Way Keel Club committee. For the past four years, she has also worked in fund raising for the March of Dimes.
Hawkins will work with two vice chairs, Mary Curran and Haywood Stowe Jr.
Curran, branch manager and assistant vice president of Central Fidelity Bank, has been actively involved with the United Way as account executive of the Manufacturing, Wholesale and Auto Division and was division chair in 1993 and 1994.
Stowe, assistant manager of personnel for Portsmouth public schools, has worked with the United Way as campaign coordinator of the schools for the past two years.
The 1995 United Way of South Hampton Roads campaign starts Sept. 7 with the fourth annual ``Day of Caring'' at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. Funds raised through this effort support 69 local health and human service agencies that help one in five local people each year. by CNB
