Capt. E.T. Deacon, U.S. Navy retired, 74, of the 1300 block of Penguin Circle, died June 2, 1995, in his residence.
Capt. Deacon was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was the widower of Kathleen Deacon.
Capt. Deacon graduated in Architectural Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute. He then began his naval career in Pensacola Flight School and was commissioned in 1939. His assignments led him to Commanding Officer of his own squadron and then to Staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. In 1960 he became Chief of Staff of Naval Aviation Safety Center. In 1961 he was assigned as Commanding Officer of the USS Sabine, and later Commanding Officer of the Aircraft Carrier, USS Boxer.
His medals include The Commendation Ribbon with 1 star, PUC with 3 Stars, NUC, WWII Victory, American Defense with 1 star, European Campaign with 3 stars, Asiatic Pacific with 4 stars, Navy Occupation, American Campaign, Korean Service with 3 stars, Korean PUC, National Defense. Capt. Deacon retired from his Naval Service in January 1969.
He was an active member of Theta XI Fraternity, USS Kearsage Association, USS Boxer Veterans Association, past President of Virginia Beach Sports Club, and a member of Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club where he sank a hole-in-one.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Whitcomb of Virginia Beach; and a grandson, Ty Whitcomb of Houston.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday June 7, 1995 in Oceana Base Chapel in Virginia Beach by Chaplain J. R. Fiol. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel will be handling the arrangements.
