Big black drum around the islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the season's first Virginia blue marlin and white marlin highlighted recent fishing action.
Scores of drum, most measured and released, have been encountered along the bridge-tunnel, with some fish in excess of 80 pounds.
Honors for the year's first Virginia blue marlin went to Jodi Bell of Rock Falls, Ill., fishing from the charter boat High Hopes with skipper David Wright. The season's first white was caught by Jerry Britt Sr. of Portsmouth on the charter boat Our Dream, skippered by Jimmy Seeds. Both billfish were released.
Some outstanding billfish action developed off Hatteras, N.C., over the past week, with more than 40 blue marlin caught and released.
Bream and shellcracker continued to dominate the freshwater scene, although Charlie White of Chesapeake earned a citation award with an 8-pound, 1-ounce largemouth bass, caught at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk. He also earned citations with big yellow perch and shellcracker.
