PARANOIA CAN TAKE MANY FORMS

I spoke with an elderly gentleman recently who was on the brink of tears. He was afraid that the Republicans are going to take away his Medicare benefits. He had of course heard this from a news program of some (liberal) sort. It struck me how ironic it is that the liberals from the president right on down have been attacking any conservative who fosters ``paranoia,'' yet they themselves are masters of the craft.

The Republicans are attempting only to slow the rate of growth of programs, and this needs to be done since growth rates far exceed inflation rates. The liberals, however, want to foster insecurity and paranoia within the ranks by creating more sacred cows than there are dollar bills to cover them. The really tragic thing is that they use the device of deceit to twist the words and intentions of conservatives concerning needed spending cuts (remember school lunches).

If the proposed budget cuts do not take place, the liberals will breathe a sigh of relief, blame Republicans for failing to balance the budget and continue to smugly reach deeper into the pockets of hard-working Americans; and they will have won their hollow victory through fostering paranoia.
