For many Dare County residents who work, the pursuit of a college degree means a drive to Elizabeth City, Greenville or Norfolk.
But under a plan unveiled Monday by College of the Albemarle administrators, two of North Carolina's four-year institutions want to bring the dream of a college education closer to home.
Elizabeth City State University and Mount Olive College want to offer bachelor's degree programs at the Dare campus of the College of the Albemarle.
COA officials outlined the proposals at Monday's meeting of the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
Mount Olive College wants to set up a weekend program, designed to meet the needs of working students, in which students can earn a bachelor of science in business administration. Mount Olive is affiliated with the Free Will Baptist Church and has an enrollment of about 1,000 students.
Elizabeth City State wants to offer a four-year degree in computer technology. The curriculum would be available to students who have completed the two-year program now offered at COA. Specifics of the ECSU offering are still being worked out.
College of the Albemarle President Larry Donnithorne and Dare Campus Dean Joe Turner said the programs would be offered at no additional cost to COA. Discussions on the proposals began last March.
``This is an excellent opportunity for the people of Dare County to earn a four-year degree,'' Turner said. ``It's a win-win situation for everyone.''
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors must approve the ECSU proposal. by CNB
