Fred Brusso Jr., chief zoning inspector with the city's Department of City Planning and Codes Administration-Land Use Bureau, has been awarded the Larry Johnson Memorial Award by the Association of State Floodplain Managers. The award recognizes Brusso as the national locality floodplain manager of the year.
The Colonial Boys & Girls Club has been presented a $2,000 grant from 7-Eleven, as part of the People Who Read Achieve literacy campaign.
The club will use the money for its Radical Readers Program, which will identify each member's reading ability, reinforce reading skills through its computer lab, which has educational games and reading software, and will use a phonics program for those who need audio reinforcement.
Volunteers for the program are being recruited, and anyone interested in volunteering or who has a child who could benefit from this program can call 622-0193.
CAMPUS NOTES Kristen Turrietta has been named Old Dominion University's Outstanding University Scholar and also is the College of Arts and Letters' recipient of the Alumni Award. She graduated with a 4.0 average and a bachelor of arts degree in art education.
Bobby E. Lehr of Norfolk has been named to the spring semester Provost's List at Averett College in Danville. To be named to the list, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.75. The son of James and Charlotte Lehr, Bobby is a rising junior majoring in religion. He also was awarded the American Bible Association Award at the college's honors convocation.
Lisa Krueger, a senior at Granby High School, has earned a four-year Monarch Scholarship to Old Dominion University, where she plans to major in civil engineering.
In addition, Krueger also received a scholarship from ODU's C.H.R.O.M.E. and a scholarship for room and board. She also received a scholarship from the Norfolk School Board.
MILITARY PEOPLE
Marine 2nd Lt. David G. Harvey, a 1989 graduate of Norfolk Christian High School, recently graduated from the basic school at Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico. During the course, newly commissioned officers are prepared for assignment to the Fleet Marine Force.
Ensign Amy Gravitt, a recent graduate of Duke University, was honored at a commissioning ceremony as the first female graduate to also earn eight varsity letters while an NROTC scholar. In October, Gravitt will report to the Naval Supply School in Athens, Ga., for further training. She is a graduate of Norfolk Academy.
Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Robert L. Hoots, son of Margaret and Larry T. Hoots of Norfolk, recently was promoted to his present rank. Hoots, a 1972 graduate of Norview High School, is stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. MEMO: If you have news about a Norfolk resident, please send it to Vicki
