Dr. Sylvia S. Whitley, 49, of 902 Greenway Court, an assistant principal with the Norfolk Public School System, died June 7, 1995, at her home.
Mrs. Whitley, a native of Suffolk, was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Whitley. She was a member of Berea Congregational Christian Church in Suffolk. Mrs. Whitley was the first president of the Holly Circle of King's Daughters. She helped organize, and was the first director of, the Run for the Children, sponsored by the King's Daughters. She received her doctorate in education from NOVA University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Survivors include her husband, Paul M. Whitley; a daughter, Christine Caskey of Virginia Beach; a son, Kevin Whitley of Norfolk; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James M. Spruill of Suffolk; a sister, Dr. Linda Aleksa of Woodstock, Va.; and a brother, Wayne Spruill of Newark, Del.
A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Berea Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. James Cress and the Rev. Robert Bennett. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday.
