FISHING PICKS UP ON DARE COAST; HATTERAS PIERS REPORT SLOW ACTION

Pier fishing was fairly good Wednesday as winds and seas subsided along the Dare Coast.

Kitty Hawk Pier anglers caught small spot and croakers two at a time on bloodworms and shrimp. Some gray trout were taken on green soft plastic artificial baits.

Avalon Pier reported little croakers, small gray trout and a few blues landed.

Small bottom fish, a few nice mullet and some keeper blues were caught on Nags Head Pier.

Anglers on Jennett's Pier caught some bottom fish and small gray trout.

Good numbers of tailor blues were taken from the end of Outer Banks Pier, while anglers fishing closer inshore caught mullet, croakers, trout and some Spanish mackerel.

Piers on Hatteras Island reported dirty water, with only a few small bottom fish landed.

In the surf, small bottom fish, skates, sand sharks and a few blues were taken from Corolla to Buxton. Many small flounder and croakers were beached around Oregon Inlet.

A few puppy drum, bluefish and a couple of Spanish mackerel were landed at Cape point, and some gray trout were taken around Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow Wednesday. Headboat action was good in the area, with croakers and small trout plentiful.

No one went offshore from Oregon Inlet Wednesday due to rough conditions.

A decrease in winds and improved water clarity should produce a return of Spanish mackerel inshore to the delight of pier and surf anglers.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 69.5 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
