TRENDS 1. DREDS

It's trendy, it's phat and all that! These fresh do's are not just for looks. Many guys at Ocean Lakes High say that dreds make the man.

When asked why some of these young brothers style their hair like this, many say for respect. Others take the lead in style from rappers like DAS EFX and Kriss Kross.

``The reason why I wear my hair this way is that it makes me feel proud of myself as a young brother,'' said Corey Goode, an Ocean Lakes junior.

Some guys have worn dreds for more than a year. They say that they took so long to grow that there's no way they're cutting them off, even for money.

They admit that sometimes dreds can cause problems. Parents and other adults don't understand where they are coming from. Many dred wearers are characterized as ``thugs.''

But dreds are liked by others.

``Girls in general love them,'' said freshman Detrick Perkins. ``They love running their fingers through my hair.'' MEMO: Jewell Burchette is a junior at Ocean Lakes High School. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
