cobia, black drum and red drum - have provided some big-time excitement for Chesapeake Bay anglers in recent days.
For openers, Harold Halterman of Lynchburg has taken the lead in the red drum category of the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with a 55-pounder, boated at Latimer Shoals, near Kiptopeke, Va., on the boat J. Bird.
Scores of big cobia have been boated, including a 58-pounder claimed by Charlotte Wright of Virginia Beach on the Therapy, taken in the same general area.
Black drum have been caught around all four artificial islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, with many fish topping the 44-inch minimum for a release citation awards from the Virginia tournament.
The most impressive freshwater catch of recent days was an 8-pound, 1-ounce largemouth bass, boated at Western Branch Reservoir by George Madison of Suffolk.

TOURNAMENT: The team of Tony Shawler of Chesapeake and Pete Kelley of Virginia Beach won a largemouth bass tournament Sunday out of Bob's Fishing Hole on the Northwest River. Their combined catch weighed 12-8. Second went to Lee Tweedy and Bobby Clark of Virginia Beach at 12-2 and third to David Perdue and Lewis Hiet of Virginia Beach at 11-14.
