The Hampton Roads Piranhas, the newest addition to the women's division of the United System of Independent Soccer Leagues, begin play Saturday, June 24 at Cox High School.
The Piranhas, featuring some of the top amateur players in the area and from out of state, will face the Eastern Division leading Long Island Riders at 7 p.m.
``I thought this area was prime for a women's team with all the talent around here,'' co-owner Marcie Laumann said. ``I think this area will welcome it with open arms. If you like soccer, you're going to enjoy watching this.''
Fans will have that chance with two home dates planned and additions to the schedule in the works.
Along with the the league schedule, the Piranhas will host their own mini-tournament August 5-6.
Tickets, which will be available at the gate or by calling the Piranhas' office at 440-5811, are $3 for adults, $2 for youth and $1 for youth soccer players in uniform. ILLUSTRATION: [For a copy of the schedule, see microfilm for this date.]
