MARYLAND: WHERE ``CRABBY'' IS JUST FINE

RIGHT FROM THE TOP, I'll admit to a bit of Virginia chauvinism. I think, for instance, that Marylanders talk funny and can be dangerous behind the wheel of an automobile. But to their everlasting credit, Marylanders do crabs RIGHT; just maybe nobody does crabs better.

They've got eight giant crab-cooking feasts/festivals scheduled between now and early September, and they don't even care if Virginians come. If you don't take in one of them you just don't know what's good for you.

Here's the schedule (with info phone numbers):

June 24, 12-8 p.m., Tilghman Island Seafood Festival, (410) 886-2677; July 19, 1-5 p.m., J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake at Crisfield (800) 782-3913; July 28, 5-8 p.m., 48th annual Rotary Crab Feast (largest in the world) at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, Annapolis, (410) 266-7848; Aug. 5-6, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Crabfest '95, St. Michaels, (410) 745-2916; Aug. 12, 2-8:30 p.m., Seafood Feast-i-val, Cambridge, (410) 228-3575; Aug. 12-13, 12-11 p.m. and 12-6 p.m., Havre de Grace Seafood Festival, (410) 939-2877; Sept. 1-3, 6-10 p.m. Friday, 10-10 Sat. and Sun., 48th annual Hard Crab Derby and Fair, Crisfield, (800) 782-3913; Sept. 8-10, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Maryland Seafood Festival, Annapolis, (410) 2678-7676.

There's actually a lot more going on in Maryland than crab eating - in fact, ``More Than You Can Imagine'' (which is a state motto). To whet your imagination call (800) MD-IS-FUN, Ext. 123. FROM HERE TO THERE

Old Dominion University will sponsor a 14-day expedition to Antarctica aboard the Estonian research ship Marine Spirit beginning Dec. 30. Stops include Santiago, Chile, and Ushuaia, Argentina. The focus will be on the political and environmental challenges that face the South Pole continent. Info: Allen J. Costa, 683-5100. FOR CIVIL WAR BUFFS

The new edition of ``Guide to Virginia's Civil War,'' a 24-page tabloid newspaper, features a user's guide to the state's newest historic attraction: a 110-mile-long, high-tech driving tour called ``Lee's Retreat'' that starts at the Petersburg National Battlefield just off interstates 85 and 95 and ends at the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. The guide also has a calendar of events and provides information about dozens of battlefields and sites in the state. It's free or at a nominal charge at most Virginia Civil War Centers; it is also available by mail ($3) from Page One Inc., P.O. Box 4232, Richmond, Va. 23220. THE REAL THING

A re-enactment of the opening of the Battle of Gettysburg will be held July 1-2 on Herr's Ridge, the actual fields where the fighting began 132 years ago. That's never been done before.

It was at Herr's Ridge, about a mile west of town on the Chambersburg Pike, where Confederates (5th Alabama) from Heth's Division of A.P. Hill's Corps advanced against Federals (8th Illinois) hastily drawn up by John Buford in 1863.

Events are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 1 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 2. Daily tickets are $8 for adults, $6 ages 6-12. Info: (717) 337-9483. GREENS FEES UNDER PAR

Eight Virginia golf resorts are offering discounts of up to 50 percent off daily greens fees for midweek play. The resorts are Caverns Country Club, Colonial Williamsburg, Ford's Colony, The Homestead, Olde Mill Golf Resort, The Tides Inn, The Tides Lodge and Wintergreen Resort. Info: (800) 93-BACK9; that's (800) 932-2259. SO LITTLE TO PACK

Nude vacationing is gaining in popularity, says the American Association for Nude Recreation, which claims 46,000 members.
