2 TRADITIONAL SUMMER PARTIES ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER

Portsmouth folks love a good party, especially when it's an outside bash accompanied by food, drinks and music. Two of the city's biggest and best are right around the corner:

The Churchland and Portsmouth Rotary clubs will celebrate the first day of summer Wednesday with their 13th annual barbecue at the Portsmouth Campus of Tidewater Community College.

As many as 3,000 people are expected to attend the outing, which includes beach and Top 40 music on two stages from 4 to 9 p.m. by ``The Fabulous Kays'' and ``Casper.''

A picnic-style meal of Rodman's barbecue, barbecue chicken and all the fixings will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Adult beverages and sodas are included.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the gate and can be purchased from any Rotary Club member or at the following locations: Don Comer Ford, 2525 Airline Blvd.; Dan Matthews Insurance, 5798 Churchland Blvd.; or Suburban Pharmacy, 3701 King St.

All proceeds from the outing will benefit local charities.

``We run our club on our members' dues, so 100 percent of the proceeds goes to charities,'' said member Ken Wren Jr.

Call Wren at 446-6827 or 484-8392 for additional information.

The Portsmouth Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce will hold its 42nd annual Seafood Outing from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 26 at the U.S. Coast Guard Support Center, 4000 Coast Guard Blvd.

``The Seafood Outing is our biggest fund-raiser,'' said Jan Burton, program manager. ``It enables us to continue on with our programs.''

New this year will be a mist tent to cool off the expected crowd of 2,500 to 3,000.

``The norm is around 2,100, but I'd like to have more this year,'' said Burton.

Food will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. The outing will also include an exhibitor tent on the picnic grounds, business displays, beach music by Bill Deal and Fat Ammon from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a silent auction.

``Delta Airlines has donated two round-trip tickets for anywhere in the continental United States,'' said Burton. ``We're real happy about that.''

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate. Call 397-3453 for tickets or visit the Chamber office at 524 Middle St. by CNB
