Martha ``Marcy'' Sims, director of public libraries, has been named chairman of the 1995 United Way Campaign in Virginia Beach.
Named as vice chairmen were Fred Twyman, president of Commerce Bank in Virginia Beach, and Robert Graves, administrator/executive vice president, Tidewater Health Care, Virginia Beach General Hospital.
According to Sims, who has been active with the South Hampton Roads United Way, ``Virginia Beach is a young and growing community. We need to concentrate on supporting families in the areas of parenting skills, health care, the importance of reading to and nurturing all children, but particularly those in the critical ages of birth to 5.''
Since corporate and community support is essential for the success of the United Way campaign, Sims would like to see an increase in corporate support. ``I want to continue to encourage our proud culture of corporate giving to United Way in Virginia Beach.''
Sims was born in Portsmouth and attended Mary Baldwin College, the University of North Carolina and Old Dominion University, earning a bachelor of arts degree in English and her master's degrees in library science and public administration.
Her past United Way activities include Keel Club campaigner and unit chair, and vice chairman for the Virginia Beach campaign in 1994. She also has served on the board of Literacy Action of South Hampton Roads and as Boys and Girls Club vice president.
Both vice chairmen have extensive volunteer and community service activities that will enable them to work toward the goals of the United Way campaign in Virginia Beach.
The kickoff will take place Sept. 7 with the fourth annual ``Day of Caring'' at Mount Trashmore. Funds raised through this effort support 69 local health and human service agencies that help one in five local people each year. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
