SCHOOL BRIEFS - PORTSMOUTH

PORTSMOUTH SCHOOLS GET MEDALLION: In recognition of its quality initiatives, the Portsmouth Public School System won the 1994 U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award.

The school system received the Senate Productivity and Quality Award medallion, the highest level quality award in Virginia, for ongoing continuous improvement programs.

The Portsmouth school system was one of five medallion recipients during Virginia's 12th annual U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award conference and banquet held recently in Alexandria. A 20-member committee, consisting of previous winners, academicians and business representatives from across the state, selected the winners.

As part of the selection process, Portsmouth Public Schools staged a Quality Fair.

The award was established by a Senate resolution in 1982.

`RACE FOR THE GOLD' WINNER: Hunt-Mapp Middle School has been named the winner of the ``Race for the Gold!'' contest in support of the ``You and Me'' exhibit at the Children's Museum of Virginia.

The school's donation of $181.64 of the $630 total put them over the top with the most money collected among participating schools.

The students and staff will be awarded gold tickets to the museum.
