John Robert Harrup, elected Southampton County commissioner of revenue in a special election last November, had hoped to run unopposed for a four-year term this fall.
He defeated five candidates last year - three in the Democratic primary and two independents last fall - to replace Edward L. Marks IV, a former commissioner who had left office under pressure.
But Marks, who resigned in August 1993 after being convicted of a misdemeanor of unlawfully copying an employee's telephone conversations, wants his job back. He's running as an independent.
Marks, 35, was elected in 1991 and served less than two years. He was originally charged with a felony of intentionally interrupting wire communications. As part of a plea agreement, he could not seek re-election until this fall.
Marks, vice president of Marks Construction Co., has an accounting degree from Elon College.
Harrup, 57, made his first try at elected office last year. He had been on the Courtland Planning Commission 15 years and chief election officer for the Courtland precinct 10 years.
A graduate of the former Drewryville High School, he was a surveyor for S.V. Camp III & Associates before being elected commissioner. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
