Southampton County Board of Supervisors
David P. Watkins and Walter Luther Young Jr., both newcomers, are vying for the Franklin seat on the Southampton County Board of Supervisors.
Thomas E. Daughtrey is not running for re-election to that seat because the city of Franklin will annex part of the district, including his home, in January.
Watkins, 45, has been on the county School Board for 12 years. He believes he can do more for schools, however, as a supervisor.
Watkins, an independent, is a graduate of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach and served nine years in the Navy before moving to the Scottswood subdivision in Southampton County 16 years ago. He is an electrical instrument planner at Union Camp Corp.
Young, 55, is a Republican. A county native, he is a graduate of Franklin High School. A farmer, he is on the Virginia Pork Industry Board and is president of Virginia Pork Producers.
He believes farmers need a representative on the board. Keeping taxes at a reasonable rate is one of his goals. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
