SOPHIE S. AMES

Mrs. Sophie Alcorn Saunders Ames, of Mathews, died Saturday, June 17, 1995, at home after a short illness.

Mrs. Ames was a native of Stanford, Ky., and the daughter of the late James Newton Saunders and the late Annie Alcorn Saunders. She attended Agnes Scott College and graduated from the Sargent School of Physical Education in Boston, Mass. She lived in New Jersey for 40 years, where she was a member of the Junior League of the Oranges. She was a past member of the Junior League of Richmond, Va., a member of the Colonial Dames in Virginia and a life member of the Garden Club of Mathews, Va.

Mrs. Ames was the widow of Walter C. Ames Jr. and is survived by one daughter, Ms. Sophie Ann White of Richmond; a son, Mr. Walter C. Ames III of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Ames' home in Moon, Va., on Wednesday, June 21, 1995, at 11 a.m. It will be conducted by the Rev. William F. Summers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mathews County Volunteer Rescue Squad or to the Mathews County Volunteer Fire Department. Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
