Two School Board members up for reappointment to the board now face competition.
Former board Chairman Pamela Edwards, in the Windsor District, is being challenged by Patricia Ann Flemming. Flemming was nominated by Teresa Weaver of Windsor and is endorsed by Windsor Supervisor L. Lorenzo ``Ren'' Spivey.
``Mrs. Flemming is a Christian mother and dedicated parent who has not only a praiseworthy academic background, but a truly diversified work experience in several vocational and ministerial settings and in several states, languages and countries,'' Spivey said.
Flemming ran unsuccessfully for Windsor Town Council last year. She was recently chosen Volunteer of the Year by the Isle of Wight Recreational Facilities Authority for her efforts in coaching the Windsor Elementary Odyssey of the Mind team.
She has one son who graduated from Windsor High this year and three other children she schools at home. Flemming said she plans to enroll at least two and perhaps all three of her children in the public schools this fall.
Edwards has been a member of the School Board since 1990. She served as chairman from 1991 to 1994. Edwards is an instructor and supervisor of student teachers at Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport University.
In the Hardy District, long-time board member Linda Morgan is being challenged by Herb DeGroft, director of personnel at Smithfield Packing Co. DeGroft was nominated by Allen Bradby and endorsed by several speakers at the Board of Supervisors meeting last week.
Morgan, who holds a doctorate of education from Virginia Tech, has been on the School Board since 1983 and served for several years as chairman. She is an associate professor and supervisor of student teachers at Christopher Newport.
DeGroft, who spent 30 years in the Marine Corps before joining Smithfield Packing, is a graduate of Old Dominion University. He has been active for several years with the Isle of Wight Substance Abuse Council and is active with other civic organizations.
The supervisors are scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday to make the appointments, which expire June 30. by CNB
