David Itchkawich was one of more than 450 American artists who
displayed their wares in tented booths that stretched from 32nd
Street to 15th Street during the 40th annual Boardwalk Art Show,
which concluded Sunday. Itchkawich, who displayed his etchings in
the show, won best-in-show at the Boardwalk Art Show in 1975. People
turned out by the thousands to browse, buy and be seen throughout
the weekend event, while the weather cooperated, with the sun out
and temperatures hovering in the low 80s. A total of $25,000 in
prizes was awarded to competing artists, including a $5,000
best-in-show stipend to Robyn Nichols, a Kansas City, Mo.,
silversmith. Nichols' winning entry was a sculpted silver sugar
bowl. The Oceanfront show was part of a 10-day celebration of the
arts, called Boardwalk '95, and it included musical performances
that included classical, jazz, ethnic, rock, country and more. The
event succeeded in attracting well over the 350,000 who attended the
1994 show, Virginia Beach officials said. Sponsor of the annual show
is the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts, which relies on 15
percent of the proceeds for its annual operating budget.
