In an annual rite of June, City Council on Tuesday will make appointments to the seven-member School Board.
At a council meeting last week, 12 people were nominated for the four board positions that are up. All four incumbents said they want to continue serving. Included among the eight nominations are two previous board members.
The nominees are:
Ulysses Turner, a former educator, runs a real estate development firm. He has served on the board since 1987. He was appointed vice chairman by the board in 1993 and was named chairman last year.
Joseph Waldo is an attorney and has served on the board since 1992.
Anna Dodson, a retired educator who served as research and testing director for Norfolk schools, has served on the board since 1993.
Robert Hicks, a board incumbent, is co-owner of an accounting firm. He served on the board from 1981 to 1987, and then was reappointed in 1993. Hicks' reappointment is in jeopardy because of a fight he and another man had in May over a traffic incident, which led to counter charges of assault and battery being filed in General District Court. The case goes to court July 6.
Lucy R. Wilson stepped off the board last year after serving since 1982, the last four years as chairwoman. She retired this year from her job as associate vice president for student services at Old Dominion University.
Elizabeth C. Parkman is a retired Norfolk educator who previously sat on the board from 1987 to 1993, in the board seat now held by Hicks.
Forrest ``Pat'' Clay Jr. is a professor emeritus of physics at Old Dominion University.
Doris L. Edmonds, an attorney, is a practicing partner in a law firm.
Theresa W. Whibley, a physician, is a partner in a private medical practice.
Donna Briggs is an attorney who currently is a labor-relations specialist with the U.S. Department of Commerce's eastern administrative support center in Norfolk. Briggs currently is spearheading a petition drive for an elected school board.
Barry Bishop, a former investment banker, is executive vice president of the Greater Norfolk Corp., a private non-profit group that promotes economic development.
James R. Herndon is president and chief executive officer of Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk. He chairs the Vocational Advisory Council for Norfolk Public Schools.
