WORKER DIES IN FALL

A ironworker died Wednesday when he fell more than 100 feet into the Elizabeth River at Norfolk International Terminals, police said.

The Norfolk Police Dive Team pulled the body of a man from the river just after 2 p.m. He was later identified as Dennis O'Toole, 25, of the 2000 block of Javelin Court in Virginia Beach.

The man fell about 11:30 a.m. from a beam that is part of a section that will be used to remodel the Coleman Bridge on the York River. He struck another beam before hitting the water, police said.

The body was sent to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death.

The victim was employed by Peterson and Beckner, a subcontracter hired by Tidewater Construction Corp.
