RUNNERS TO HELP IN CRIME PREVENTION

Several hundred runners will leave the Civic Center on Cedar Road and race their way through Great Bridge Saturday morning. It's the third annual five-kilometer run sponsored by the Crime Prevention Council.

Registration Saturday morning begins at 7 o'clock with a registration fee of $12. Pre-registration is $10. There will be free T-shirts for the first 200 entries and certificates of accomplishment for everyone who enters.

Awards will go to the first-, second- and third-place finishers in several age categories and to the oldest and youngest runners.

The 5K run will begin at 8:30.

The Tidewater Striders will help coordinate the activities as well as participate. The City of Chesapeake, Chesapeake Police Department, Farm Fresh, Virginia Power, Hearndon Construction, H2O To Go and Xerox Corp. will help sponsor the event.

St. Joseph Container Co., Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc. and Sam's Club provided the T-shirts.

Donations and fees go to help the Chesapeake Crime Prevention Council continue its programs, including Kids Night Out, National Night Out, Block Watch, the McGruff House program and McGruff, the crime prevention dog. by CNB
