A Chesapeake student scored top in the state for math in a contest sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.
Kevin Chen, who was a fifth-grader this year at E.W. Chittum Elementary School scored higher than all other fifth-graders invited by the Johns Hopkins Center to take a high-level test.
The center sponsors a contest each year for fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders who score high on standardized tests. The fifth- and sixth-graders take an exam that's designed for eighth- and ninth-graders. The seventh-graders take the high school SAT. Students who score well get awards.
About 4,150 Virginia students participated this year - 3,300 seventh-graders and 854 fifth- and sixth-graders. There were 55,000 contestants nationally.
