Southwest winds slowed king mackerel and cobia action on piers along the northern beaches Thursday. One king mackerel was taken on Jennette's Pier during the afternoon, by L.P. Simpson of Kill Devil Hills. The only other large fish reported were a couple of jacks that were released by anglers on Nags Head Pier.
On Kitty Hawk Pier, a few Spanish mackerel blues, speckled trout and spot were landed. Avalon Pier reported some nice speckled trout taken during the morning and small blues over the afternoon. Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught lots of small blues and several speckle trout. In addition to the big king mackerel, Jennette's reported some croakers, a few blues and trout landed. Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier had a good afternoon catching lots of blues, a few trout and small bottom fish.
On Hatteras Island, anglers on Rodanthe Pier reported some spot and blues taken. A few bottom fish were landed on Avon Pier. Rain hampered fishing on Frisco Pier but some bottom fish were taken.
In the surf, scattered small croakers, spot and sea mullet were landed along the northern beach area. Some nice sea mullet, small blues and croakers were beached in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton. Anglers at Cape Point caught a few flounder, sea mullet and blues. Along the beach in the Frisco area some mullet and small gray trout were landed.
Dolphin fishing was good northeast of Oregon Inlet yesterday. Tuna fishing was slow overall. A sailfish was released by the Carolinean and a blue marlin by the Prime Time.
Off Hatteras, in deep water, dolphin fishing was excellent. Most of the fish taken weighed from 5 to 7 lbs. Tuna and marlin action was slow.
Pier action should be good for king mackerel, cobia, small blues and Spanish this weekend if the water remains clear and in the 70s.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers pier in Duck was 71.5 degrees on Thursday. by CNB
