ISLE OF WIGHT SUPERVISOR SPIVEY TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

L. Lorenzo ``Ren'' Spivey, a county Board of Supervisors member who is seeking re-election, had what witnesses called a breakdown on town streets Wednesday.

Sheriff Charles W. Phelps said Thursday that deputies were alerted to ``a strange occurrence'' by a 911 call at 3:04 p.m. He declined further comment until after talking with the Isle of Wight County attorney.

Witnesses said Spivey parked his car on Duke Street, near Windsor High School, and walked about a block down Church Street to the home of a woman he recently endorsed for a School Board appointment.

The witnesses said Spivey pounded the door and outside walls of the house and screamed. The unusual behavior continued after he left the house and headed toward the school, the witnesses said.

Spivey, 48, was taken by ambulance to Obici Hospital in Suffolk. A hospital spokesperson would not confirm whether Spivey was admitted.

Spivey, an adult probation and parole officer for the Suffolk-based Fifth Judicial District, served twice on the Windsor Town Council, on the town planning commission and on the county planning commission before winning the Windsor District seat on the Board of Supervisors in a special election last year.

His supervisor, Chief Probation Officer Michael D. Andrews, said Thursday that Spivey was on sick leave. ``He is in the hospital, and I'm very concerned," he said.

Witnesses said that Spivey, who learned recently that he would be opposed in November's election, earlier Wednesday had been visiting voters who signed his opponent's petition. by CNB
