A barking dog alerted a family that their trailer home was on fire early Thursday, fire officials said.
The family escaped, but one of the occupants was burned when he returned to try to put out the fire, said Jeff Messinger, Suffolk Fire spokesman.
The trailer, on Cottonwood Road in Magnolia Meadows Mobile Home Park, was destroyed.
The fire broke out about 3:21 a.m. Firefighters fought the blaze more than two hours.
William H. Rigstad, whose age was unavailable, had second degree burns on his shoulder, Messinger said. Rigstad was treated at the scene by Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.
The fire started in the front bedroom with an extension cord that was under a leg of the bed, Messinger said. The trailer, valued at $15,000, and its contents, estimated at $8,000, were total losses. by CNB
