MAN ACCUSED OF BANK ROBBERY

A 46-year-old man turned himself in to police Thursday night, saying he had robbed a bank several hours earlier to get attention and help before he did ``something stupid,'' police said Friday.

Lorenzo Brown of the 400 block of N. Main St. was charged with one count of bank robbery. He was being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail Friday in lieu of $2,500 bail.

About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, a man had approached a teller at Crestar Bank in the 100 block of N. Main St., saying he wanted to make a small withdrawal of a couple hundred dollars, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.

The man had his hand in his pocket, giving the impression he could have a weapon, Simpkins said. The teller gave him the money and he walked out the front door, Simpkins said.

Brown went to police headquarters about 8:05 p.m. and said he had robbed the bank because he needed money and help. He attributed his actions partially to a drug problem, Simpkins said.
