BEACH EVICTION LEADS TO 5 DRUG ARRESTS

Five people, most of them teenagers, staying in a rented beach house in Corolla were arrested on drug charges this week.

Currituck County sheriff's deputies Bryan Bradley and Lee Twiddy were aiding in the eviction of the renters when they noticed marijuana seeds and stems on a table. That led to a search of the Ocean Hill house and vehicles and to the arrest of five people from northern Virginia, a police spokesperson said.

Charged Wednesday with possessing marijuana were Wes Barnes and Steven Sarro, both 17 and from Vienna, Va.; Jason Ryan Posey, 17, Carl Richard Marrelli, 18, and Jason Hayes Omasta, 21, all of Herndon, Va.

Posey and Omasta also were charged with possessing drug paraphernalia. Marelli also was arrested for possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

A hearing for all five is scheduled for August 23 at the Currituck County Courthouse.

The day before the drug bust at the beach, Deputy Joey Davidson located 20 three-foot-tall marijuana plants being cultivated on the county's mainland in a wooded area on Middle Gibbs Road near the Virginia border.

On June 14, Cpl. Fred Smith and Deputy James Lance pulled 71 marijuana plants in a wooded area off Ranchland Trail in Moyock. These plants were several inches high, a police official said.

Police did not know Friday who owned the properties where the plants were being cultivated, said sheriff's department spokeswoman Susan Johnson.

Limited manpower left the sheriff unable to surveil the areas until someone came to check on the plants, Johnson said. The plants, however, were destroyed. by CNB
