RAINS GOOD FOR GRASS, BUT WEEDS THRIVE, TOO

Rains of the last two weeks have been great for lawns and gardens, as well as weeds and crabgrass. Stay after the undesirable intruders before they get larger. Pull weeds by hand or spray with Roundup, Kleenup or Finale. If you're like me, you dislike waiting two weeks to see results, but the ``quick-acting, one-day'' variety kills only top growth. Perennial weeds, which are some of the worst, grow back from their roots. No sprays are very effective against crabgrass. Pulling by hand or hoeing work best. NEW BUTTERFLY BUSH

Davidii Darthmoor is a new variety of Buddleia, or butterfly bush available through Wayside Gardens catalog.

Buddleia blooms all summer and attracts butterflies when in bloom. PINCH BACK MUMS

Pinch chrysanthemums to make them spread out and be bushy. You can take the part you cut or pinch off, place in moist sand and it will root. Use Rootone to hasten rooting. Chrysanthemums should be fertilized monthly. Continue pinching out the tops until mid-July. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
