TOWN TALK

Forbes family has grown

Regular Town Talk readers will remember there was a hitch in Del. L. Randy Forbes' summer pool plans.

A mama duck made her nest in the pool at his home. Ever the considerate family man, Forbes has held off getting his pool into summer shape in fear of disturbing mom and her 11 eggs.

But there's good news to report.

The Forbes' family now has several new additions, after five baby mallards were hatched last week.

``I called my mother this morning and told her you're a new grandmother,'' Forbes' wife, Shirley, said with a laugh.

Soon after the golden brown fuzzy ducklings entered the world, mom nudged her brood into the Forbes pool for some serious swimming lessons.

After a swim, the little ones usually join mom and their unhatched siblings for some cozy nesting. And every evening, the father shows up to check up on his family and have a few quacks with his wife.

Although the Forbes family is delighted with the new additions, the ducks have put a crimp in their plans for the summer.

The baseball party for Forbes' 9-year-old son, Justin, had to be canceled and moved to another site in fear of disturbing the new family and the remaining eggs. And their pool is still off limits to humans. But that will soon change.

``We're going to buy one of those small plastic kiddie pools and put up a ramp for the little mallards,'' Shirley Forbes said. ``We're also going to protect them from turtles and cats by putting some wire around the pool.'' Car wash waxes wise on TV fare, bans talk shows

If you're having your car cleaned at the Knell's Ridge Car Wash on North Battlefield Boulevard, don't think you'll be able to catch up with the latest shenanigans on those salacious daytime talk shows.

They're now strictly forbidden on the car wash's waiting room television set.

The stuff is just too risque for the patrons and their children, said cashier Cassie Tyree.

``Our customers were complaining about the content on those talk shows,'' Tyree said. ``Many of our customers bring their children in the waiting room while their car's being washed. We have had a stack of complaint cards on this.''

In view of this, the car wash made those shows off limits, posting a sign near the cash register stating: ``To our patrons: Out of consideration to our customers and to younger children, we are no longer watching talk shows.''

``The majority of our customers said it was a good job to do that,'' Tyree said. ``But a few said the kids can just go outside when those shows are on.''

What's on the Knell's Ridge Car Wash television these days?

``We now have the set on CNN,'' Tyree said. sh: :wq!: not found by CNB
