The recent accomplishment of the Odyssey of the Mind team from Crestwood Intermediate School is a source of pride for all of Chesapeake.
Six fifth-graders and a third-grader from Crestwood traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., last month to test their creativity and problem-solving abilities against the cleverest youngsters from Canada, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Poland, Australia and throughout the United States.
The team earned the right to compete in the World Finals by first prevailing over 13 teams from other Hampton Roads schools and then defeating 140 schools at the state finals in April.
Even amid such select competition, the Crestwood kids placed fifth overall and won first place in long-range problem-solving.
Youngsters who achieved a comparable level of excellence in athletics would have been welcomed back to town with enormous fanfare. We don't always acknowledge that the ability to think, to find solutions to problems, is of more value in the long run than proficiency at games.
Chesapeake has no better ambassadors to send into the wide word than its talented young people. by CNB
