State Police said Robert N. McFarland of Hampton was driving east on I-64 near Oyster Point Road about 1 a.m. when the bullet struck him.
McFarland drove up the highway a short distance where a State Police trooper was on the side of the road on a routine traffic stop of another motorist. McFarland was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.
McFarland said he did not remember seeing any other vehicles in the area when he was shot. State Police searched the area but found no one.
