HARRIETT B. MAJOR

Harriett Branch Major, 83, died June 27, 1995, in her home.

Mrs. Major, a native of Portsmouth, was the widow of Robert Leonard Major Jr. She was a former teacher at the New York City School for the Blind and the Maryland School for the Blind in Baltimore. She had also taught at the Port Norfolk Elementary School, Portsmouth. She was a graduate of Longwood College.

She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church; Ruth Mayhall Circle of the United Methodist Women; the Wednesday Book Study Club; and was a volunteer for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol M. Smith of Sharps, Va., and Charlotte M. Minor of Richmond; a sister, Charlotte B. Noble of Richmond; five grandchildren, Charlotte W. Hughes, Benjamin G. Smith III, Anne Hunter Smith, Cameron M. Raquet, G. Gilmer Minor IV; and a great-grandchild, C. Watkins Raquet.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, in Monumental United Methodist Church by the Rev. R. Beverly Watkins. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. The family will be at her home. Memorial donations may be made to the Restoration Fund, Monumental United Methodist Church, 450 Dinwiddie St., Portsmouth, Va. 23704.
