SOCCER CLUB TURNS 10, GIVES SCHOLARSHIPS AWAY

The Beach FC travel soccer club celebrated the 10th anniversary of its annual scholarship program recently - awarding five scholarships to graduating seniors who have participated in the organization's programs.

Each award is for $500 - two being given to the annual male and female Bob Sokolinsky scholarship winners. Those awards are given in recognition of Sokolinsky's leadership as a founder of the soccer movement in Virginia Beach.

The three remaining scholarships are given to male or female graduates who have shown themselves to be ``best all-around'' in academics, sports and extracurricular activities. One of those awards is in honor of Kerri Lynn Rose, a Beach FC player who was killed in a 1990 automobile accident.

Each of the following winners was chosen by the club's scholarship committee.

The male Bob Sokolinsky winner is Matt Whalen of Cox. Last year's Group AAA state player of the year will play collegiate soccer at Virginia Tech. This year, Whalen made the All-Group AAA first team. Also a member of the Falcons basketball team, Whalen graduated with a 3.4 grade-point-average.

The female winner is Salem's Julie Miller. Miller - also a two-sport athlete - is a tri-Group AAA player of the year and will attend the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. A member of last year's Olympic Development Program state team, she finished her high school academic career with a 3.8 GPA.

Cori Orem of Princess Anne captured the Kelly Lynn Rose scholarship. Finishing with a 3.8 GPA, Orem has a long list of club, school and outside activities.

Matt Wilbricht of Cox was another scholarship winner, finishing as a Brickell Scholar and Falcons valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. Another two-sport athlete, Wilbricht will attend the University of North Carolina.

Kirstie Neidlinger of Salem is the final scholarship winner. A second team All-Group AAA selection, Neidlinger is also a two-sport star and has vast state and region ODP pool experience. She will attend the University of Alabama. MEMO: Got an interesting sports-related story to tell? If so, call The Beacon
