WALTER E. SAWYER

Walter Eugene Sawyer, 72, of the 2800 block of Flag Road, died Wednesday, June 28, 1995, at his home after a long struggle with cancer.

Mr. Sawyer was born in Creswell, N.C. He was the son of the late Walter and Dessie Overton Sawyer and was predeceased by his daughter, Dorothy Carolyn Brewer. Mr. Sawyer had retired from the Ford Motor Company, Norfolk Assembly Plant, as a quality control inspector after 32 years of service and had worked for Chesapeake Siding and Roofing, Chesapeake, for 12 years in counter sales. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and the Ed Cuthrell Sunday School Class, and was currently serving as Deacon and Trustee. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy P. Sawyer; his son, Mark E. Sawyer of Chesapeake; four sisters, Learolene Brickhouse of Columbia, N.C., Lillian Davis of Elizabeth City, Marjorie McPhearson of Virginia Beach and Audrey Hebert of Chesapeake; six brothers, Leon Sawyer and Lionel Sawyer, both of Elizabeth City, Robert E. Sawyer of Smith, Ala., Gilbert Sawyer of Concord, N.C., Everett Sawyer of Chesapeake and Darrell Sawyer of South Mills; two grandchildren, Matthew Brewer and Charlene Small; and two great-grandchildren, Mary Carolyn Small and Selina Small.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Myers and Dr. Roscoe Musselwhite. Interment will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the ``Together We Build'' fund of Deep Creek Baptist Church.
